Chicago Building Permits
Building permits in Chicago are issued by the Department of Buildings, which also runs inspections and trade licensing. Repair work and many small improvements are filed online through the Express Permit Program, where applicants apply, check status, pay fees, and view inspections; it replaced the paper-based Easy Permit program in November 2023. Work that needs architectural plans goes through Standard Plan Review, and issued permits since 2006 are searchable in the City's public building permit dataset.
