Mount Prospect issues its own building permits through the Building Division of Community Development. Applications are taken electronically through the village’s Online Portal, or on paper in person at Village Hall, and the village publishes flat permit fees for most residential projects.

This guide covers the Village of Mount Prospect’s permit office, residential fees, contractor licensing, codes and inspections. The village fee ordinance itself could not be checked, so the fees below come from the village’s residential fee page.

What requires a building permit in Mount Prospect?

The village’s residential fee list covers fences, roofs, sheds, decks, concrete pavement, simple mechanical, electrical or plumbing projects, kitchen remodels, basement finishes, full interior remodels, fire restorations, residential additions and new homes.

Every new sign, including a new sign face, needs a permit, and the village asks that no sign be contracted until the permit is approved. All commercial projects need architecturally stamped plans; some residential projects also need an architect or licensed professional.

Illinois leaves building codes to local government, but since 1 January 2025 any local code must regulate structural design at least as strictly as baseline editions of the International Building, Existing Building and Residential Codes, and where no code was adopted the statute sets minimums for commercial buildings and new homes (Public Act 103-0510).
