Boston Building Permits
Building permits in Boston are issued by the Inspectional Services Department, which enforces the Massachusetts State Building Code, 780 CMR, exactly as every other city and town in the Commonwealth does. Zoning is Boston's own: the city has its own Zoning Code, Zoning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeal. Projects above the Article 80 thresholds go through development review by the planning agency, and the building permit cannot be issued until the agency has issued a certificate of consistency confirming the construction plans match the Article 80 approval.
