In Weatherford, the City’s Inspection Department (the Permits and Inspections office at 522 W. Rainey Ave., 580-772-7451) issues all building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits, registers the contractors and inspects every phase of construction. Applications are made on the City’s paper permit worksheets with plans delivered to the office, and the city code gives the building official 10 working days to approve, conditionally approve or deny a complete application.
What needs a permit in Weatherford?
Chapter 4 of the City Code requires a separate building permit for each building or structure that is built, enlarged, substantially improved, repaired, relocated, placed, altered, moved or demolished, and for each mobile or modular home placed on a lot. The code also calls for its own permit for:
Construction permits
- Electrical, plumbing and mechanical work
- Fences, including alterations
- Demolition, with a bond and an owner’s statement
- Moving a house or heavy structure over city streets
- Signs and swimming pools, on their own City applications
- Any man-made change to land in a flood hazard area
Street and utility work
- Cutting pavement on a street or alley
- Ditching in public easements or right-of-way
- Pipes, cables or lines across streets by companies without a city franchise
Fences may not stand in front of the front building line and are limited to 6 ft, or 8 ft at most where extraordinary circumstances require it. On a corner lot, nothing between 2 ft and 6 ft high may block the 30 ft sight triangle at the intersection.
Who issues building permits in Weatherford?
The Inspection Department issues the permits and inspects construction, reconstruction and alterations, registers electrical, mechanical and plumbing contractors, and facilitates the Planning and Zoning and Board of Adjustment meetings. It also handles abatements of dilapidated property and several business permits, including alcohol, eating and drinking, taxi, pawnbroker, private fire line and solicitor permits. Under the flood damage prevention ordinance, the City’s Building Inspector and Code Administrator is also the floodplain administrator.

Weatherford permit forms and contractor registration
The City posts its applications on its Printable Forms page:
- Residential Building Permit Worksheet: owner, contractor, legal description, materials, foundation, roof, number of stories, basement and safe room, square footage of living space, garage, porch, patio and upper floor, the wiring, plumbing and mechanical contractors and the estimated value.
- Commercial Building Permit Worksheet: intended use, floor area and area under roof, stories, height, estimated value and the three trade contractors; the office records the drainage plan, site plan, number of plan sets and any fire sprinkler system.
- Swimming Pool Permit Application, filed with one set of drawings showing the site plan and pool features, and a Sign Permit Application.
- Storm Shelter Registry, Food Truck Requirements and a Flush Certificate form.

Get a free quote →Contractor registration: electrical, mechanical and plumbing contractors, general contractors (which the City defines to include residential and commercial builders, roofers, fence, foundation, demolition and pool contractors), irrigation installers and water well installers register with the City. A new registration costs $100 and a renewal $50, and the contractor’s responsible party can add staff members who may then apply and pay for permits and request inspections. The commercial worksheet requires electrical, plumbing, heat and air, fence, sign and driveway work to be done by contractors licensed by the State where a licence applies and registered with the City.
Electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits
Each trade has its own permit from the Inspection Department. Electrical and plumbing permits go to contractors licensed by the State and registered with the City, and no mechanical work may start before a mechanical permit is issued and its fees paid. In a home the owner lives in, the owner may do the plumbing or electrical work personally, provided all permits are obtained and every inspection is called for and performed.
The City Clerk and building official will not let municipal utilities be turned on to any unit or structure that has no building permit.
Weatherford permit fees
The City Code leaves building, trade, fence, moving and demolition permit fees to resolutions of the City Commission rather than printing them in the code, and the code requires the fee to be paid with the application; call the Inspection Department (580-772-7451) for the resolution fee that applies to your project. The fees that are written down:

| Floodplain development permit application review | $100 |
| Floodplain development permit | $25 |
| Floodplain inspection | $25 each; no single service over $500 |

Plans, review and permit life
All plans for construction, fire sprinkler systems and alarm systems go to the Permits & Inspections office, addressed to the Inspector; the City returns incomplete submissions, which delays the project. Under the code, drawings must be to scale and show floor plans, structural details and computations. Before signing the permit, the building official checks that the land is zoned for the use, that the flood provisions are met, that the lot has road access and sanitary service, that recorded easements are clear and that other City permits are in place.
The decision is due within 10 working days of a complete application. A permit that is not started and actively pursued within six months becomes void unless the building official extends it, and a new permit at the regular fee is then needed. Display the permit on site where it can be seen from the street.
