  • Electrical permits
  • Plumbing permits
  • Mechanical permits
  • Fence permits
  • Storage sheds and accessory work
  • Residential and commercial alterations

Permit costs and local fees

Palmetto’s published building fee schedule states that, unless a category is specifically listed otherwise, permit fees are based on construction valuation. For new construction and additions, the city uses the higher of the applicant’s stated construction valuation or the current ICC Building Valuation Data calculation described in the schedule.

The city also publishes separate miscellaneous fees. Examples include a $130 driveway permit when connecting to a street, a $75 floodplain management permit fee added to the building permit fee, $100 for a residential stop-work-order release and $250 for a commercial stop-work-order release. Work commencing without required permits is charged double permit fees plus the stop-work-order release fee under the published schedule.

Electrical, plumbing, mechanical and other trade permits

Palmetto issues electrical, plumbing and mechanical (heating, cooling and refrigeration) permits as major permits alongside building permits. Changing a contractor or subcontractor on a permit needs a letter from the fee owner and costs $30 per permit.

Application documents and plan requirements

Contractors must register with the city every year before they can open a BS&A online portal account. Send the contractor information form, an agent authorization form, liability insurance naming the City of Palmetto as certificate holder, workers' compensation or exemption, a valid state licence or Manatee County competency card, and a copy of the licence holder's driver's licence together in one email to Buildingdepartment@palmettofl.org.

If the Building Official questions the stated value of a remodel, renovation or miscellaneous permit, the city can ask for a copy of the signed owner-contractor contract at application.
