- Unincorporated county: Stokes County Planning & Inspections, for zoning and for building and trade permits.
- King: the City’s own Planning & Inspections Department enforces the State Building Code and issues building permits; it also plans and zones a one-mile extraterritorial jurisdiction. Its Inspections office is at 110 W. King Street, lower level (336-983-8265). King extends into Forsyth County.
- Walnut Cove: the Town publishes its own permits application, with fee lines for building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and zoning. Planning and zoning questions go to Town Hall (336-591-4809).
- Danbury: before any home or business construction or sign work in the town or its extraterritorial area, the Town requires its own Zoning Compliance Permit ($35) or Sign Permit ($10). Its zoning ordinance and map are at Town Hall (336-593-2002). The Town publishes nothing on building permits; ask Town Hall which office inspects.
- Tobaccoville: a Forsyth County village whose Stokes County part has no residents in the Census estimate. The published sources do not say who permits there.
Applying through the GovBuilt portal
Since September 5, 2025 the County has accepted permit applications through its Planning and Inspection Forms Portal on GovBuilt; forms can also be emailed to permits@co.stokes.nc.us. Register a profile with a username, email and password, then fill in the online form. A draft can be saved and finished later, and each submission becomes a case where you can follow its status, see payment history, read staff comments and upload missing or corrected files.

Inside King, apply to the City; inside Walnut Cove, use the Town’s form. Everywhere else outside the towns, apply to the County.

Inspections in Stokes County
County inspections are tied to the GovBuilt case: once one is scheduled it shows under Upcoming Appointments, and staff comments appear in the case record. A failed inspection costs $50 to re-inspect the first time and $75 for each further failure. Inspections after hours cost at least $200 for the first hour and $100 for each hour after. Before a final, a temporary Certificate of Occupancy can be issued for $60 on a house or $125 on a commercial building.
