Gatesville building department: who handles permitting
Development Services adopts, interprets and enforces the building codes and zoning ordinance for property inside the city, issues the permits and inspects the work. Its Planning and Community Development staff handle zoning, platting and Planning & Zoning Commission cases. Gatesville lies in Coryell County, and land outside the city limits is not covered by these City permits.

- List of every contractor with state licences and company details
- Building plan including electrical layout
- REScheck or COMcheck energy report
- Commercial: TDLR registration for jobs over $49,999, engineered plans for buildings over one storey or 5,000 sq ft or spans over 24 ft, and a Knox box
Smaller jobs
- Sheds and carports: site map showing 10 ft to the house (25 ft to a commercial building) and 3 ft to each lot line, plus the brochure or framing and materials list
- Fences: site map and material; 6–8 ft in back, 4 ft in front with every other picket removed

- Retaining walls over 2 ft: engineer-stamped drawings
- Solar: layout, schematics and an engineer’s letter that the roof can carry the panels

Texas building code
Texas has no single statewide building code: state law makes the International Residential Code the base code for homes in cities and the International Building Code the base for commercial buildings, with each city choosing the edition and its own amendments, while the National Electrical Code and the energy code apply statewide. Outside city limits most counties issue no building permits for homes. Texas building code rules
