Building permits inside Crowley are issued by the City’s Code Enforcement Department at City Hall, 425 North Parkerson Avenue (337-788-4100), and the City Inspector is the chief building inspector. Apply through the City’s iWorQ permit portal or by email to buildingpermits@crowley-la.com. The City code sets the building fee at $0.45 per square foot under roof for a permit with plan review, so a 2,000 sq ft house pays $900.

Building permit fees are set in Section 5-4 of the City code (last changed by Ordinance No. 1449 in November 2012). The online code is current through Ordinance No. 1554, adopted August 18, 2026, and still shows these rates.
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Construction or alteration, permit with plan review | $0.45 per sq ft under roof |
| Construction or alteration, permit without plan review | $0.20 per sq ft under roof |
| Moving a building (within the city or out of it) | $40 |
| Demolition | $50 |
For a 2,000 sq ft house under roof, a permit with plan review is 2,000 × $0.45 = $900, before trade permits. The code does not say which jobs qualify for the lower rate without plan review. Violations of the building rules carry fines of $200, $500 and $1,000 per day for a first, second and third offense.

How to get a Crowley permit: 6 steps
Confirm the lot is inside Crowley and whether it is in the downtown historic district, which needs commission approval first.
The portal asks for a site plan with every building application; the City posts a site plan template.
File the Building Permit Application in the iWorQ portal, or email it to buildingpermits@crowley-la.com; applications are reviewed in the order received.
The electrician, plumber and HVAC contractor each pull their own permit and must hold a City of Crowley licence.
The permit is void if work does not begin within 6 months, or stops for a year.
Notify the City Inspector’s office (337-788-4100) when work is ready; the permit can be tracked in the portal.
Crowley inspections
The City Inspector and Code Enforcement staff carry out inspections. For electrical work, the City code says the inspector inspects within 24 hours of being notified, and wiring that will be hidden must be inspected before it is covered. Plumbing must stay uncovered until it is inspected, and no water may be turned on except for testing until the final plumbing certificate is issued. The gas supplier may not turn on gas to new or altered piping until the City’s gas certificate is issued.
Extra inspections cost $50 each for plumbing and gas, and an electrical installation found defective adds a $50 fee.

Downtown historic district: the Downtown Historic District Commission reviews restoration, renovation, demolition and new buildings in the district before a permit is issued. Submit six sets of sketches or drawings showing dimensions, facade details, colors where relevant, setbacks and heights compared with neighboring buildings; the commission’s recommendation goes to a City Council committee.
Fences: the fence permit form limits front-yard fences to 3 feet and side or rear fences to 8 feet. On corner lots nothing over 3 feet may stand in the 30-foot sight triangle at the intersection.
Moving buildings: a moving permit takes at least 3 business days to review, and a building taller than 10 feet 6 inches when loaded needs route approval from the utilities.
Flood zones: the City code (Article V) requires a floodplain development permit in special flood hazard areas, and a new or substantially improved home there must have its lowest floor at or above the base flood elevation, certified by an engineer, architect or land surveyor. The flood maps in force are the FIRM dated November 26, 2010.
Trees and drainage: the residential checklist asks for a land clearing permit where protected trees are involved and a drainage plan for new homes.
Louisiana building code
Every Louisiana parish and municipality enforces the state’s Uniform Construction Code (R.S. 37:3737), adopted by the Louisiana Uniform Construction Code Commission: the 2021 International Codes with Louisiana amendments, in force since 1 January 2023, and the 2020 National Electrical Code, with the 2024 codes taking effect on 1 January 2027. A local government may set more stringent requirements only with the Commission’s approval, and the State Fire Marshal reviews plans for fire and life safety on all but one- and two-family dwellings.
