The Town of Clayton Inspections Department reviews building plans, issues all building permits and inspects construction. Development Services receives applications, assesses fees and issues approvals. Permit Clayton, the Town’s new online portal, launched Phase I on July 6, 2026.

Start at the Permit Clayton Hub. Permit Clayton is the Town’s online system for submittals, fees, status, inspections and updates. Phase I opened more than 20 record types to customers on July 13, 2026, and the Town says more record types will be added in later phases. The Inspections page also still links ePermits, the older online service for registered contractors.

Clayton says payment must be received before plan or permit reviews and re-reviews, unless stated otherwise. Development Services applies payments by 9:00 a.m. the next business day. Any outstanding re-inspection fee must be paid in full before another inspection is scheduled.

Electrical, plumbing, mechanical and gas coordination

Clayton Inspections handles electrical, plumbing and mechanical work along with the building permit. Zoning inspections for site development and landscaping are done by the Planning Department.

Permit Clayton routes plans and application materials among Planning, Engineering and Inspections. Development Services publishes a Community Development Submittal Schedule with review times; the Town says these are estimates and do not include its Sufficiency Check processing time.

The Town’s FAQ says calling staff directly does not count as an official request. Work must be ready by 8:00 a.m. on the inspection date, and cancellations must be made through the request line by 8:00 a.m. that day, or re-inspection fees apply.
