For land outside its cities, towns and villages, Iberville Parish issues building permits through the Permits & Inspections Department at 58030 Meriam Street, Plaquemine (225-687-5150). Every application is filed online in MGO Connect, the posted schedule charges $125 per $100,000 of construction cost for a new home, and the work must be substantially complete within 2 years.

What needs a parish permit?

The parish’s building permit checklist tells owners to get a permit from the Parish Building Inspector’s Office before starting any construction or remodeling, including homes, commercial buildings, major remodeling and placing a manufactured home. The Permits & Inspections Department lists the permits it issues:

Parish permits

  • New construction
  • Plumbing, electrical and mechanical work
  • Demolition
  • Solar panels
  • Mobile homes

May also be needed

  • Planning Commission site plan approval for buildings over 30,000 sq ft
  • Health review for a septic tank or individual treatment plant
  • A stormwater plan for more than 1 acre of soil disturbance
  • DOTD approval for a driveway on a state or federal highway

Under the parish’s Unified Development Code, no building permit is issued until the land use complies with the code and every Planning Commission approval the project needs has been granted. State law (R.S. 37:3737(I), as re-enacted by Act 881 of 2026) requires a parish that issues permits to permit and inspect roof construction and reroofing, and R.S. 37:3738 bars parishes from enforcing the building code on a detached residential accessory structure of 200 sq ft or less, unless it stands in a hurricane-prone region with a design wind speed of 130 mph or more.

Who issues building permits in Iberville Parish?

The Permits & Inspections Department, directed by Benjamin Bello, issues permits, inspects construction and enforces the parish’s FEMA flood zone rules. It also handles complaints about high grass, debris, derelict structures and junk vehicles. The office is open Monday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The parish building inspector also sits as an ex officio member of the Planning Commission, which meets on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Meeting Room on the second floor of the courthouse, 58050 Meriam Street. Iberville Parish has six incorporated places, and they do not all use the parish office:

How to get an Iberville Parish permit

1. Check who permits the address

Use the table above; Plaquemine and St. Gabriel run their own offices.

2. Check the flood zone and zoning

Look the lot up on the parish’s interactive flood zone map and find out whether the project needs Planning Commission approval first.

3. Ask for a pre-application conference

The C-2 conference is optional and has no fee.

4. Open an MGO Connect account and apply

Upload the C-1 application, plans and any prior approvals.

5. Pay and receive the permit

Call 225-687-5150 if you need the fee for your project before applying.

6. Request the inspections

Ask for the foundation and pre-occupancy inspections, then obtain the certificate of occupancy.

Inspections and occupancy

The Unified Development Code sets two required site inspections. When the foundation preparation is finished, the permit holder asks for an inspection, and within 2 business days the code enforcement officer confirms the foundation is placed where the approved site plan shows it. When construction is finished and before anyone moves in, a second inspection checks the work against the site plan and any Planning Commission conditions, also within 2 business days of the request.

A certificate of occupancy is required for all new construction that needs a building permit. Work must be substantially complete within 2 years; the code enforcement officer can grant one 1-year extension if the project has started and complies, and extended performance sureties are then required.

Local Iberville Parish details

Flood zones: the department enforces the parish’s FEMA flood zone rules and publishes an interactive flood zone map. The Unified Development Code requires a new or substantially improved home in a special flood hazard area to have its lowest floor at or above the base flood elevation, certified to the floodplain administrator.

Plaquemine: inside the city, building, electrical and plumbing inspections are done at the foundation, framing and completion stages; each request must come from the contractor, electrician or plumber doing the work, and no inspection is done unless the permit is displayed on site.

Demolition: parish code section 4-18 requires a $25 demolition permit for any building or structure over 220 sq ft, with utility disconnect letters, proof that the sewer line is plugged or the septic tank filled, legal disposal of debris and no burning on site.

Rosedale and Grosse Tete: West Baton Rouge Parish requires all state-licensed contractors and subcontractors to register with its permit office before applying for a permit in Rosedale or Grosse Tete.

⚠️ Pending in White Castle: the Parish Council’s September 22, 2026 agenda included a cooperative endeavor agreement for the parish to perform building permitting and inspections inside White Castle. The minutes recording the outcome had not been posted by October 20, 2026, so ask the town (225-545-3012) which office takes applications.

Louisiana building code

Every Louisiana parish and municipality enforces the state’s Uniform Construction Code (R.S. 37:3737), adopted by the Louisiana Uniform Construction Code Commission: the 2021 International Codes with Louisiana amendments, in force since 1 January 2023, and the 2020 National Electrical Code, with the 2024 codes taking effect on 1 January 2027. A local government may set more stringent requirements only with the Commission’s approval, and the State Fire Marshal reviews plans for fire and life safety on all but one- and two-family dwellings.
